Welcome to the Southchurch Park East page.
The Southchurch Park Watch group has been awarded funding from the Cory Environmental Trust to create a conservation area in the south east corner of Southchurch Park East. The area involved stretches along the perimeter with Shaftesbury Avenue and Wyatts Drive; East of the lake and down to the brook. Consultation has been undertaken with the local primary school with a view to their involvement in the project; also with local residents.
The copse has already been cleared of dumped rubbish by teams of members. Log piles for small mammals have been introduced. The grass area will be planted up with indigenous plants; whips will be planted along the south bank of the brook; and defining paths have been cut through the grassed area. Work on the paths will commence on Saturday 1 March
Wildflower planting will commence on Saturday 15 March - the grass area will be allowed to grow, but the barley grass (the bane of dog owners) will be erradicated. This area will be cut twice a year and the clippings removed. Nesting boxes will be affixed to trees in the copse.
Saturday 15 March 1100 wildflower plugs comprising red clover, poppy, oxeye daisies, cornflower etc have been planted in prepared beds in the centre of the meadow. About 50 whips have been planted to create (ultimately) another copse close to the lake. Five nesting boxes have been fixed to the trees in the main copse and the main path marked out
